The idea for the hostel stemmed from the awareness that many of our students live rather far from the school. Apart from walking to the school everyday, some would ride a bicycle or a motorbike.
Others would squat in the homes of relatives or friends, going back home only on weekends. This actually put a huge burden on the host families.
So we went on a donation drive to build a hostel for girls. The first hostel was opened in 2018 taking in 30 girls. In honour of the late Ms Loh Mei Lin, the main leader of our community project in Cambodia who passed away in 2015, the hostel was named “Asrama Mei Lin”.
To accommodate the boys, we decided to renovate a house nearby and turned it into their hostel. It can accommodate up to 30 students as well.
Due to overwhelming demand from the girls, another house belonging to a local ‘grandmother’ was remodeled into a second female hostel. This hostel is known as “Asrama Nenek Mai”, named after the owner of the house, who previously brought in the girls into her home out of the goodness of her heart.
